Linux Host

Farweo Host for Linux.

Remote support on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS x64 with an active X11 desktop. Run the host as the signed-in desktop user; it is not a system service.

Free for personal, non-commercial use within the Personal plan limits. For work use, choose Business at signup or start your one-time 90-day Business trial from Account plan whenever you’re ready. A paid plan is required after the trial. Compare plans.

Linux Host v1.0.188. Device health reports now include CPU, memory, disk, uptime and available reboot status. Includes native-resolution JPEG/PNG capture, pointer shape updates and uploads to the selected Files folder. Verify the included SHA256SUMS file after extracting.

System requirements

Supported platform

Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, x64, with a logged-in X11/Xorg desktop session. The host captures and controls that desktop and should run as the same user. Other distributions are not yet validated.

Not supported yet

Wayland-only and headless sessions, audio, rich clipboard formats, clipboard file paste, multiple monitors, and remote restart.

Run the Linux Host as your signed-in desktop user. It needs the active desktop session's DISPLAY and XAUTHORITY to capture the screen and send input.

Install and register

Run this command in a terminal as your signed-in desktop user on Ubuntu/Debian x64 or a derivative. The installer detects runtime package names for your release; the Linux Host is tested and supported on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS:

curl -fsSL https://farweo.com/install.sh | bash

The installer installs dependencies using sudo, verifies and installs the latest Linux Host, and runs setup to display your Host ID and generated password. Save the password, then start ~/.local/bin/farweo-host-linux from your X11 desktop terminal.

Stop the running Host and rerun the same command to update. Your Host ID, password and settings are retained. To start at desktop sign-in, use curl -fsSL https://farweo.com/install.sh | bash -s -- --autostart. This takes effect at your next sign-in. Wayland-only and headless sessions remain unsupported.

For manual installation:

Download the archive, then install the X11 capture, input, and clipboard tools:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install ffmpeg xclip xdotool x11-xserver-utils libx11-6 libxtst6 libxfixes3 unzip

Extract it and verify the published files:

mkdir -p ~/Applications/farweo-host
unzip ~/Downloads/rc-host-linux.zip -d ~/Applications/farweo-host
cd ~/Applications/farweo-host
sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS
chmod +x ./farweo-host-linux

When updating, stop the running host with Ctrl+C before extracting and use unzip -o to replace the old files. Then run ./farweo-host-linux --version to confirm the installed build before restarting. Existing Host ID and password are stored separately and do not require setup again.

Run setup once, then start the host from a terminal in the active X11 desktop session:

./farweo-host-linux setup --server https://farweo.com
./farweo-host-linux

Setup prints the Host ID and a generated connection password. Save the password; it is only shown during setup. To start Farweo when you sign in, add the executable path to your desktop environment's Startup Applications.

Linux hosts in an organization workspace

When the organizations pilot is enabled, use an organization enrollment credential during local setup or explicitly transfer an eligible personal device from the organization console. Operators select the organization in Windows Console or the browser viewer and need explicit device grants; a Host ID and password cannot bypass organization access controls. Read the organization setup guide.

Attended connections need zenity to display an approval dialog in the logged-in X11 desktop. Install it with sudo apt install zenity before offering attended access. Missing UI, denial, or timeout prevents the connection. Organization enrollment does not add headless or Wayland support.

Update Linux hosts locally using the published package. Remote organization host updates are supported on Windows; the Linux Host has no self-updater.

Use Linux as an approved wake relay

When the service administrator enables Wake-on-LAN, an awake enrolled Linux Host can send a magic packet for a configured device on its approved LAN. Initiate the request from Windows Console. The Linux Host needs its signed-in X11 session and a running Host; keep that relay awake and online.

The target and relay must belong to the same personal account or organization and approved network. Organization wake requires an explicit Wake grant and organization policy approval; use the organization browser console for requests and setup. Approve relay participation in Windows Console's Wake / wake setup… and have a local administrator provision the target/MAC/interface allowlist before enabling relay delivery. A successful packet send is not confirmation that the target woke. Follow the complete setup and troubleshooting guide.

Inspect a Linux target without changing settings

Farweo collects wired adapter inventory; Linux wake support still depends on the NIC, firmware, standby power and intended power state. Inspect current addresses and driver-reported wake settings, replacing enp3s0 with your wired interface:

ip -4 address
ip link
ethtool enp3s0

The ethtool utility may need to be installed, and inspection permissions vary. Its Supports Wake-on and Wake-on fields report driver support/configuration; they do not prove firmware readiness or supported power states. Persistence depends on your distribution and network manager. Farweo does not automatically change these settings or promise wake from every power state.

Supported features

  • Remote screen viewing and mouse/keyboard control.
  • Plain-text clipboard sync in both directions.
  • Remote directory browsing and file upload/download up to the configured limit.
  • Uploads use the remote folder selected in Files. Uploads without a selected folder use ~/Downloads/RC.

File transfers default to 100 MB. Change FileSizeLimitBytes in the included appsettings.json; the same-named environment variable overrides it.
